Now that the Independence Day celebrations are all finished and summer has arrived, don’t think for one minute that the celebrations of summer are all over with.  Let me introduce to you the St. Ignace “Festivals and Fireworks” campaign for the summer of 2009.

Last September the idea of having fireworks every Saturday evening came up during our weekly St. Ignace Special Events Committee meeting.  At the time it seemed like such an innocent but awesome idea.  What has transpired over the past 9 months has been an incredible amount of work, dedication and enthusiasm from every community member in this little town of St. Ignace.  Not only has the committee been enthused about this program, but the whole community has been on board and excited about the summer that is now upon us.

During the summer of 2009, the community of St. Ignace will be hosting a summer long celebration called Festivals and Fireworks.  Each Saturday, from July 4th through September 5th, St. Ignace Michigan will play host to a Festival during the day and will cap each night off with a fireworks lightshow starting at dusk.  That’s right…fireworks every Saturday night over the bay in St. Ignace and you know the best part about this, it’s free…that’s right, FREE!  What better way to cap off a day on Mackinac Island or a family gathering or even planning a trip to Northern Michigan just to get away from it all.  St. Ignace is the place to be this summer.

After the committee had come to the full intention of “Festivals and Fireworks” and committed heart and soul into making this program a reality and success, the work started.  We started with a commitment to have weekly meetings, then came the “how”, then came the budget, then came the communications/Marketing plan and then came the who is going to lead this group.  Wow, a whole lot of things to accomplish.  Don’t worry; we have plenty of time…famous last words…”we have plenty of time”.  Sound familiar.  From the start we knew we had an uphill battle raising this much money in this economy.  We reached out, not only to the business community, but individuals, associations and clubs as well, the outcome has been nothing but positive.  We organized a vendor for the actual fireworks, found a platform in which to fire the lightshow, hired an ad agency and started to seriously raise money.  Just like that, the committee started to move forward.

The daytime activities on each Saturday range from Farmer’s Markets to Music Festivals, to our Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow that celebrates our Native American/French heritage here in St. Ignace and not to forget our annual Fish Feast celebration that celebrates our fishing heritage and the building of the Mackinac Bridge.   Then you cap the evening off with a magnificent lightshow over the Harbor, I cannot imagine a better way to spend a day while visiting Northern Michigan.
